un-newsworthy

It was in the news yesterday. There was a warrant out for the arrest of Guy Lafleur (retired NHL superstar). It turns out he lied when he testified during a bail hearing for his son last fall.

His 23-year old son faces more than 20 criminal charges, including sexually assaulting a minor, armed assault, uttering threats and forcible confinement between 2004 and 2007.

I'm not a parent and I'm not in the situation, so I'm not 100% certain of what I would do. However, I strongly believe that I would NOT lie to protect my child if he had sexually assaulted a minor or assaulted someone with a weapon. I wouldn't be too pleased with him if he had forcibly confined someone either.

As exhibited by Mr. Lafleur's actions, not everyone sees this the way I do. There was discussion about it on some radio stations and also among colleagues today. Some people say that a parent will protect their child, no matter what the circumstances. I wonder how many would do as Mr. Lafleur did.

I'm also disappointed that this was on the news for a couple of days. If it were any Joe Blo, no one would hear about some guy who had a warrant for his arrest because he lied to protect his son. I doubt there would even be a warrant. They would just go get him. It's not like the police don't know where he lives and he certainly wasn't a flight risk.

I haven't really been following it, Anna. And while I get your point about why this was newsworthy...

The guy's a hockey icon. This IS huge news in Montreal and Quebec, but everywhere in Canada, too.

He's larger than life in the hockey world. And other high-profile players or coaches in other sports have similarly had their family lives invaded too.

I'm not saying it's right, but I'm saying people DO want to know this stuff. If we didn't report it, they'd get it somewhere else and wonder why it wasn't in the news.

Lafleur's son sounds like a bad-ass, doesn't he? And his famous dad is protecting him. If he's bad, he's bad.

And if his father is protecting someone who's bad and lied about it, well...

Yeah, I know people want to know and I know that's why it has to be reported. I just think we shouldn't want to know... you know?

I've heard others say the son is a badass. It certainly seems that way. What kinda pisses me off is that some say, "Oh, but he has Turette's Syndrome". How does this excuse the behaviour? And if his disability is causing him to be violent and into drugs, then maybe he needs to be in a controlled environment.

I'm ranting. I'll shut up now.

THat is ridiculus, I never heard about it, but I don't believe in that at all.

Not sure if you remember my friends house getting vandalized or not. But the 12 fourteen year olds that got caught, got nothing but a slap on the wrist. And not a one 'I'm sorry' from them or the parents. These were supposedly her kids friends. The parents all knew her kid.

If that was my kid, I'd drag them by the ear and make them appologize and make them help clean the mess up.

It's so sad the way the world is going.

Ah the double edged sword of Celebrity.

What a fickle bunch we are. When you're up we adore you but when you're down we will gleefully tear the flesh from your limbs.

I can understand how the Flower wants to protect his son because it is a reflection on HIS character. Clelebs don't need to live vicariously through their children..especially in this instance.

Guy has some dough so you would think that an expensive Lawyer would make this all go away...until the perjury..merde!

I shall count my blessings, there is something to be said for being a nobody.

miranda - yes, I remember you writing about your friend's house. I can't believe the parents didn't do more. My parents would have killed me if I had behaved that way when I was a kid.
